Amateur Digital Cameras

trying to get a consensus from a slew of photographers--the best "amateur" digital camera out there right now. DH is leaving for Afghanistan soon and needs one to take with him. what are your recommendations? TIA

you would need to give us a little more information about what you are looking for as the lines between amateur & professional equipment is very thin these days. Are you looking for a DSLR, a point & shoot, etc?...

He would probably LOVE to use an DSLR but a Point and Shoot would be more practical. It woudl need a decent zoom and we may want to enlarge photos....i am used to using Film, so i am not up withthe digital stuff. thanks
