Laptop comparison question for shooting directly in camera
by Ken Latman on Jul 10, 2008 at 7:43:15 pm

The issue has come up again about upgrading the laptop to use for
photoshoots. Unfortunately there is not enough money in the budget to
warrant an "expensive" MacBook. Here are the specs that I was look at
originally:

Apple MacBook Black

• 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo
• 2GB 677MHz DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
• 250 GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
• Superdirve 8x (DVD+R DL / DVD+RW / CD-RW)
• AppleCare Protection Plan for MacBook Auto-enroll

The cost would be $1748
With accessories like cases and keyboard covers and bumping the RAM to
4GB it would be around $1900.

Can you get a comparable system on a Windows platform for less?

I look at the Dell site for some starting points, but honestly I'm
lost as two the plethora of configurations and vendors you can deal
with in laptops.

Is there a particular site you would recomend other than Dell to
configure a laptop to matching specs.

A laptop was suggested to use for when we are on outside the office
photoshoots to display the image to clients as we work. With the Canon
setup you can shoot directly so the camera writes to the harddrive of
the laptop/desktop.

Any assistance is much appreciated.
