save from digital camera directly to external hard drive?

I'm going to be working on a project where I'll be doing some time lapse imagery over several hours that requries using HD quality images. I suppose I could buy a memory card capable of handling the pictures but I was wondering if anyone has any experience using an external hard drive as the storage device for a digital camera. This will be outside so there's no shot at having a power source.
I'm afraid I don't have the details yet on interval between images or exact length of time so I can't do the necessasry math just yet.
I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience. Thanks so much for your help!
