Confused about resolution

I thouht I understood this resolution thing. But now I am confused. I have a Nikon D70. When I take Large JPG images they are 3008 x 2000 pixels which rounds to 6 megapixels. Now when I take a RAW (NEF) image the size is only 1520 x 1007 pixels, or 1.5 megapixels. Why are only about a quarter of the pixels used in a RAW image?
I know raw has advantages in color depth (48 bit vs 24 bit) and the actual file size is larger, so there is more data stored for the image OR is it just compressed a lot less?

Where/when are you getting the file info for the NEF? After processing it in PS? If so, check your output size in the Raw converter. You can set the output to be larger or smaller than the NEF.
