I like the Casios--I own the ExZ850---8.1 megapixel, manual controls, good battery life and good stablization. I also own a hi end digital slr and I am amazed how good the Casio is.
Kinda late, but check out the Sony CyberShot T9 by Tim Wilson on Sep 9, 2006 at 8:44:35 pm
I've been shooting seriously since 1975, and professionally for several of those...and I've never been happier with a camera than this one. It's crazy small (2.2 x 3.5 inches, .8 inches deep -- yes had to look that up), but between its 6 megapixel image size and Carl Zeiss lens, the images are stunning.
As for the rest of your list, Bob --
--Optical stabilization, check. On for shooting only by default, but you can also keep it on all the time, kinda useful for setting up shots.
--Long battery life, check. The usual caveats apply: flash reduces battery, etc.
--While not an optical viewfinder, pretty much the whole back of the camera is a beautiful LCD screen. I find that not only do I not miss a viewfinder, I now find viewfinders too small to view. :-)
Some other notes: it can shoot MPEG video. I wouldn't throw away the video camera, but it's a lot better than phone quality.
Don't even think about using internal memory only. Spend the dough on a big memory stick. I like to keep images on the camera to show friends, and this makes it easy.
Take a look at the DSC-T9 online --it really is a beautiful little thing. There are some cheaper ones around, but none better IMO.
