Nikon 17-55 Lens

On the dpreview.com forum, there has always been a lot of talk about this lens. It seemed to be the answer to solving the wide angle to mid-telephoto issue for a lot of shooters.
However, it seems if you track the posts in the Nikon forums as of lately, there seems to be a big issue with lens - it apparently does not work in AF mode correctly from 17-28 mm or so...
I found this out the hardway as mine does not properly work in that range. I have tried it on my S2 & D2X with no success. I even went into B&H & tried it on a D70 but I really didn't make a conclusion about it in the store.
I returned the lens for repair stating the issue & it performs the same incorrect way upon its return.
I now focus this lens completely manually when I use it & seem to have started doing that will all my AF lenses...

That's crazy Clay. Nice lens in theory, but to fork over $1300 for a lens that doesn't focus is just wrong. How could Nikon have done so bad w/a top of the line lens? I hope that they just had a bad batch. As for it being serviced and returning unchanged; I had the same problem w/both our D60 and 90mm T/S. Took them to Canon, waited a week (it was rushed and and I hand delivered).

Yes, I am using this lens, but I hardly ever use AF. What I am disappointed about is the amount of barrel distortion in the 17-28 range. (Considering its price.)

Clay,
Apparently this fellow was also having issues focusing his Nikon lenses (not the 17-55). His post is labeled, "Fixed my D2x focus issues". How is that for a teaser! I'm not sure he had complete success with every lens but he apparently believes he had some success and his approach seems enlightening.
BTW, manual focusing is not the answer for many of us. I don't have confidance my eyes are as sharp as they used to be and I depend on auto focus, especially in certain conditions.

That is an interesting thread to read on dpreview.com because I started playing with the A4 setting yesterday. Unfortunately, it is a separate issue from the DX focusing issue.
Yes, I would like to rely on AF too. It is funny how recently I have decided I don't trust my cameras to focus correctly using AF...
You can AF this lens in particular if you zoom to 55mm and focus and then switch to MF and zoom back out to where you want to be. It is a cumbersome process because the zoom is sluggish on this lens & the AF/MF button is very stiff as well.
I not sure where the repair solution is going to come from as well. I have seen people on dpreview post that they sent in all of their lenses and camera and now they work perfectly together & I have read the opposite.
My issue first arose on the S2 anyhow & I have already sent the lens in for "repair" and it is not working correctly...
So, I guess I will wait for now and see what happens with other people in the same situation.
