 | IR test results

Well I bought a Hoya R72 IR filter for our 1Ds M2 at work. I was hoping to get some different looking shots of models, but it probably isn't going to happen.
I went out and shot some landscapes and the exposures were REALLY LONG. Even at f3.5 the exposures were 4sec, and that was at 400iso. Whew! Tried some normal shots and it was obvious the camera was working properly. So, not being one to give up, I took the filter home and tried it on my D70. What a difference; f8 @ 90th/sec. (260iso) was fine. Now I did have to hold the filter against the lens (wrong size); but if any significant stray light got in, it would've obliterated the image. So, I guess this is all to say that the IR filter on the 1Ds CCD is much more aggressive than the one on the D70. I haven't tried it on a D60, but I'm guessing manufacturer's stick to certain basic strategies as they develop products.

anyone try IR with 20d? what were the results? I'm going to New Orleans next week and was thinking how cool IR would be in some of the graveyards down there. Hey Ed how about posting a pic or two.

I will post a couple pics after I a) bring the D70 shots to work and b) find a way to post them. I don't have a site I can put them on, so I'm kinda at a loss. If I remember correctly, we can't post direct to the forums yet.

you could look into http://www.pbase.com/
A lot of the photographers from dpreview.com use this for hosting their images.

Thanks Clay, I completely forgot about that sight. Here's the link to the 1Ds MII images, I'll add the D70 tonight or tomorrow.

I just shot/processed a few colour IR photos on my D30.. I'm having some problems with noise (even with the Canon's long exposure reduction option turned on) - does anyone have any tips or software suggestions for reducing the noise without sacrificing too much sharpness?

Kieran, Noise Ninja seems to do well. If I loose too much detail, I stack the Ninja version over the noisy one and mix 'em.
BTW, what filter(s) do you use? How are color correcting, I assume your images come out all red before processing also. I used R. Harrington's Levels method, but I ended up with a brown sky.

My workflow is currently this:
1) Bring the RAW photo into PS with limited processing
2) Swap the red and blue channels in channel mixer
3) Bring in the levels in each of the colour channels
4) use the grey point pipette in curves to adjust the white balance (trial and error works best)
5) use targeted hue/sat adjustments - usually I boost the saturation of the blue range and take down the red/magenta range if the photo's still muddy
The channel swap will get you the blue sky, and the curves adjustment will remove the red/brown tint from the leaves.
If anyone has any suggestions on how to bring more of this process into Camera Raw I'd be interested.

Thanks Kieran, I'll give that a try.
I got the D70 images uploaded. The fStop and exposure were not what my memory remembered, but still faster than the 1Ds MII. Now, I just need to by one for my D70 so I can get out and have some fun.
