image stretch/distortion in image swap

I'm trying to create a website with small thumbnails and then when you roll over them, the image shows up next to the thumbnails in it's original size. I made a table within a table -- one that is 1 row and two columns and the first column holds the thumbnails and the second holds the original image (where I put an image place holder). The problem I'm having is when I roll over the thumbnail, the original image is distorted/stretched to the size of the image place holder. Even when I make the image place holder size the same size as the original image, it is still distorted. How do I avoid this? Also when I roll off the thumbnail there is a question mark in the place of the image place holder. I hope that makes sense, please help me! Thanks so much!

You can use the tooltip spry instead a rollover.
It's very easy to use. Just select your image, add the tooltip spry and a yellow area will appear at the bottom of your document. Place your big image there (or any other content) and preview.
