Opening blank browser window in flash
by joseph wilkins on Nov 3, 2009 at 9:21:56 pm

So I have a portfolio site built in flash and I want to show clients websites I have created - without leaving my site, so I use a target > blank in the url and launch the website in a new window.

This works fine on my mac, but when previewing on a PC, it does not open.

Any ideas? My URL is http://www.pro-creative.com

thanks

Works fine on Windows here.

Lots of people use pop-up blockers of one kind or another, though, which might cause you issues with this approach.

Is there another better approach to have a small window pop up from a flash thumb gallery? My client wants this instead of the image appearing in a fixed place within the site. I've thought of creating a fake window frame within flash and just call up that frame.

My bigger issue, if anyone has any thoughts, is that when my new browser pop up window is activated the original flash thumb gallery disappears. Only first 2 thumbs are linked right now on this test page:

any thoughts, help would be appreciated.

The idea of popping out a draggable Flash panel, "as if " a pop-up browser window seems like it has potential. It would avoid pop-up blcckers, would mean you could keep focus, and of course you would have control of the layout and where the image / "window" would first appear.

Maybe you would want a carefully quirky, individual "window" frame design, though, given that different operating systems and different color schemes apply to actual pop-ups ...

Thanks for the encouragement for trying the "fake new browser window" in flash. I do think it will give me greater control and I think I'll be able to design a panel more attractive anyways. I haven't found another solution to fix what I already did, so I'll give that a try.
