animating with CS3

-Still just getting my feet wet with learning flash. So many questions.
I've realized that my 15years of grfx/fx and compositing are of limited value in translating those skills to creating animations in Flash. The process and tools are so very different. Frustrating at times, but very exciting to realize the endless possibilities.
My question today is quite fundamental: what are the advantages to using as3 to control the animations of my various elements vs. creating keyframes and using the other tools provided in the interface?
Can this benefit be seen from the users perspective. (the user in the case being the person using the website or presentation).
