really obvious question - but would appreciate the basic guidance

Hi,
I've come back to Flash after a number of years using director. I've got the hang of setting up buttons, etc etc. BUT I cannot for the life of me get a motion tween set up that can do a simple fade up from black.
I've double checked everything (well obviously something is missing..)
1. I set up a layer.
2. create a rectangle on the screen and then convert it to a symbol. (I have also created the two keyframes and then converted to a symbol, with similar lack of success - see next point)
3. I then insert a keyframe at the end and proceed to the tweening context menu. But it will still not let me use the effect drop down menu.
I have tried every combination I can think of, but with no result at all. I have followed numerous tutorials.
I realise it's simple and obvious, so would really appreciate your help

Try the following.
1. make box
2. select box and create graphic or movie clip symbol of it.
3. make two key frames at your beginning and end points
4. select first keyframe
5. in the properties dialog select motion tween
6. click on the actual symbol
7. now in the properties box (note that it's changed) change color to Alpha and choose 0%
That should now make your symbol fade up from 0% transparency. I think that's what you want to do.
