Buffer for FLV?

I am using Flash 8 Professional.

All I am trying to do is add a buffer screen to allow some time to load. I've tried a few different methods using the tutorials on creative cow and Flashcomguru but I still can't get anything to work. Am I missing something in those? Does anyone have any advice on what direction I should go?
