need help bringing in video from a DVD and converting it to Flash file?
by steph122 on Jun 19, 2006 at 2:00:28 am

I'm working on a highly video based website, it is for a director, so the quality of video is the most important. All together I have a bout 30 videos or more to include, in the site.., I'm planning on doing a progressive downlaod to display them....My files only exist on his DVD and I need to know of a good program to rip them from DVD to a file that I can use in Flash. DVDxDi pro has been recommended, and so has Handbrake 7.0...which is the best solution? Once I bring the files in, I need to resize the video to 640x480, and keep the best resolution possible. Someone has also suggested Sorensen squeeze. I would appreciate any help on the best way to bring these files in...i'm SOOOO stuck! Which programs do I need...etc...or suggestions on settings for importing the videos as well -

First, if you don't have it already, get Flash 8. The video quality is superior to Flash 7's video.

If you are on a Mac, I would suggest using Handbrake to convert to Quicktime. On Windows, DVD Decrypter to rip and one of the Videora converters to get to Quicktime. Then use the Flash 8 Video Encoder (it came with your copy of Flash 8).

I haven't used Sorensen for Flash video, so I don't know if that one is better than the Flash 8 Video Encoder. I can't see purchasing Sorensen when I've been happy with the output of the free converter that comes with Flash 8. Someone correct me if it is worth the price though.

If you're going to use Flash MX2004 (FP7.0) then you very much do want to purchase Squeeze, since MX2004's video conversion was difficult and VERY poor quality, while Squeeze's was quite good and EASY.

However, I will agree with Matt, that if you're using Flash 8, the Flash 8 Video Exporter does an excellent job, but while I haven't used it (didn't need to/want to spend the $$$) I've heard from others that both the new version of Squeeze and the Flix Pro converters do a better job, mainly because of the ability to do 2pass encoding and a slightly better optimized codec.

hmmm....thanks for the help so far everyone...

I'm using Flash 8 professional....I've finally been able to bring the files into a quicktime format (MP4)...now I just need to bring them into Flash. My client wants the video files to be at about 485x360...which are very large. Some of the music video files are around 60 megs....quite a bit for a site. If I bring them into Flash for 'progressive download' they're definaly smaller, but require using a 'skin' in order to make the buttons work. Is there I was to not use a skin, and create my own control buttons???? I'd love to use the FLV file format, but both my client and I are not happy with the choice of buttons/over all look of the different skins.

The Video Basics Series (1-8) here in the Creative Cow tutorials will show you how to create your own player you can design however you want to look.

there`s a suggestion of possible way: first you have to find any dvd-ripper (there are a lot of) and after it get a converter to create flash from video.i can advise to you some i`ve been using last time- video to flash converter (on geovid.com) or on vidflash.com (your file will be converted online & free, but it isn`t a program,as distinct from the first variant mentioned above). the developers are the same. so you have to choose the best variant yourself.
