Real time video to flv encode? Is there a box?
by Joe Paolo on Aug 23, 2005 at 10:08:40 pm

Is there a box that can in real time encode video and audio to an flv file? We have an hour+ weekly event that the client would like delivered in flash. We are trying to avoid: capture to tape, digitize, then into Squeeze.

Flash Communication Server can encode live video directly into FLV files. You can also use a Flash Video Streaming Service (FVSS) like Vital Stream to do this if you don't want to shell out for FlashComm server.

Is this something we could load onto a laptop or what ever, and use on location?

Yes you could run FlashComm server locally on your machine. I have done that before. The other thing to mention is that the new video capabilities of Flash 8 will change a lot of things. There will be new tools avaialble. You should check with On2 since they are creators of the VP6 codec that is inside of the Flash 8 player. They may have a realtime encoding tool available.

Check out the Flix Engine. This may do exactly what you want.

SO flix engine would sort of supply the flv codec to say Windows Media Encoder?

I haven't used the new Flix tools since they haven't been released yet. But here is a board that can encode to FLV in realtime. See it here.

Great! And let us know if you implement a realtime FLV encoding system as I'd be interested to see how it works.

Thanks
