C4D Individual text->letter objects

I am new to C4D and am having trouble animating individual letters of a word. I figured out how to extrude it, then how to use the current state to object tool, but now I can't animate individual letters.

How do I break the object apart into letters? Or do I have to create each letter individually?

before you use the Current State to Object go into the Text spline you used and check off Separate Letters - assuming you used the Text spline...
