Graphics card advice needed
by Vadim Hohlovkin on Jul 24, 2008 at 7:37:24 pm

Hi,

I plan on buying a new AGP card for my old P4 2,8Ghz system and after narrowing it down to HD2600 xt and x850 xt I'd like to ask which will give me better performance in the c4d viewport or are they the same as far as cinema is concerned?
Alternatively will there be a major benefit to picking HD3850 over one of these cards - I'd have to spend 50EUR more on it - or will it just be wasted money.
HD3850 does have twice the VRam of the HD2600 and x850 but is the amount of VRAM critical for Cinema4D?
I've heard that Nvidia has better OpenGL support and that Cinema might benefit more from it, but the only one I'd be able to get would be the 7600gt.

Thanks in advance.

Well, I am using an iMac 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo / OSX 10.4.11 /
NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT / 3GB RAM.

So far everything works very well with any software I am using (Photoshop, Illustrator, Final Cut Express, Toon Boom Studio / Digital Pro PLE, Cinema 4D 10.5 ...
(Especially Enhanced OpenGL works beautifully with Cinema 4D).

Sorry, can’t commend on those other cards.
(I have only heard that some people had Enhanced OpenGL issues, not displaying the Shadows properly, with the ATI Radeon HD 2600 in Cinema 4D)

Cheers
Nolan

Hi,
thanks for the reply.
I've heard about some openGL problems in Cinema with ati as well, but the reason I've been reluctant to buy the 7600 is I've head a chance to borrow one from a friend (albeit the GS version) and while fast enough for my purposes, the colours in the editing programme I use were totaly skewed (the closest to describe is to imagine a multiple-generation video copy on the cheapest VHS-cassette from mid-90s), while strangely enough the lowly radeon 9200se I've had lying around rendered the picture deceptively close to the matrox card display I'm used to. So I was wondering wether the wrong colours in some video editing programmes are a common problem with nvidia cards or just particular to that one card I borrowed, or if there are some driver adjustments to resolve this problem?

Regards,
Vadim

Well, it’s the first time I hear someone having such issues with the”7600”...
(it might be just a problem with that particular card or your system ?)

With OSX there is no direct driver adjustments possible, so can’t commend on that.

Cheers
