Rendering Video with a Transparent Background
by ianhouser on Feb 23, 2007 at 8:23:00 pm

I am relatively new to C4D, and my main objective in learning it is to integrate with my proficient After Effects use.

That said, I'm having trouble importing a rendered video FROM C4D into AE7 that has alpha. It consistently comes out with just a black background in AE, even with an object underneath. I do know AE very well, so I'm pretty sure it's nothing on that end.

I don't think this is troubleshooting; I just need someone to tell me the steps. If it is troubleshooting, I will include more information.

Thankyou all very much

Umm, rendered video? That sounds like trouble in the first place. Are you sure your CoDec even supports Alpha? If it does, then you probably simply forgot to enable Alpha on the render settings. It's off by default.

Hi Mylenium, can you be more specific in your answer. I'm experiencing the same thing. I want to output a quicktime file (Animation + Alpha) codec. Where do we select the setting to output our 3d model (animation) to retain alpha. Is this object buffering?

thanks for your help

Thanks for your input.
I use alpha all the time so I know it works. I'm using C4D R10 and I enabled alpha in the render settings, but I don't know how to use those settings for an actual render. I've been using Make Preview for the render , since I can't seem to find an actual render function for video. That might be the problem there.
