Meeting topic. The new digital SLR cameras that shoot video too.
by Ray Palmer on Sep 17, 2009 at 11:02:36 pm

Scott and I have been hearing a lot about the new Nikon and Cannon DSLR cameras.
I, for one, am blown away by what they can do and I am interested to see if this would be a good meeting topic.

We would be asking Earl at Broadcast rentals to start the discussion with what he has found and then I hope to include anyone that is using this technology now.

Any feedback regarding this meeting topic?
Later,
Ray Palmer

Great topic! I have been doing a lot of investigating into this very topic myself. There is a lot to say on all sides of this issue right now, especially being so new.

I've been shooting SD and HD video on a Canon 5d Mk II for about 3 months now.

I've completed 3 projects including some studio green screen work.

Some things are AMAZING. Some things are a pain. (like returning to the days of double system sound!)

So I'll be happy to share my experience and my footage results if anyone's interested.

Given that we have a new OS, that has introduced some challenges... as well as a new FCS Studio... wouldn't covering that make more sense in the short term, given the name of this group,?

You're quite right, Mitch. There's been enough time for this all to percolate. Now we're ready to stage a meeting that has some hard facts and user experiences, and not just speculation.

I'm working on getting Apple out to a meeting in October. Apparently, we fell through the cracks when I requested an Apple rep come talk to us about the new Studio. That's what I get for sending them an email on the day the software is released :-o

If the DSLR meeting comes together before Apple, so be it, but we'll get both done.

If I gave the impression that the DSLR meeting wasn't a good idea, then I misspoke. My point was simply that all the new FCP stuff has certainly generated enough challenges and "urban legends" that I don't know anyone who thinks they have a handle on it. Given the name of this group, a discussion seemed logical.

Case in point: Up until 5 minutes ago I didn't know that 10.6 doesn't support AppleTalk anymore? That might explain all the dead printers under Snow Leopard. Printer drivers are no longer available from HP for 10.6... you have to use what's in the 10.6 discs.

Up until then I had decided to pass on 10.6 mostly because it appeared that 10.6 would require replacing my expensive networked HP laser. I've just now determined that it will work. At 50 cents an hour for my time, I won't tell you how much it cost me to get an answer to that simple question.
