AZ Final Cut Pro User Group Meeting!
Thursday, 01/29/2009
ASU Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication
555 N. Central Avenue, Phoenix - 6th Floor
doors 5:30, meeting 6-8:30pm.

ASU Cronkite School - Downtown Campus

This brand new, state-of-the-art facility is not only a bright star for ASU and the city of Phoenix, but is also home to likely the largest Final Cut Studio installation between Los Angeles and New York!

Macs are the order of the day here: aluminum iMacs and Mac Pros are everywhere you look in this place (and even a few minis thrown in). The future home of KAET Channel 8, the Cronkite School is already outfitted with 2 full stages with attached control rooms, an impressive newsroom/set, and over 20 (!) dedicated Final Cut Studio edit bays connected to 65 TB of SAN storage.

Jim Jacoby, the school's Production Manager has invited us to tour this amazing facility. Come see where the next generation of broadcast journalists will hone their craft!

Sony XDCam HD

Ever since Sony introduced the world's first professional, optical media HD format, the world's production community has been abuzz about it.

More recently, Sony introduced the XDCam EX series of cameras, featuring SxS solid-state media you can plug directly into a Macbook Pro or current-gen Macbook!

XDCAM's revolutionary file-based workflow allows the user to browse, ingest and export high quality content exclusively as data files, greatly enhancing the speed and flexibility of the editing process.

Val Reynolds of Sony will show off the latest examples of these technologies, walk us through the state of XDCam HD products, and explain how it works -seamlessly- with Final Cut Studio.

Val has also promised a raffle item!

ScopeBox

ScopeBox is truly a "Whole New Box of Tricks". This Mac native, Universal Binary App combines the functions of a Preview Monitor, Waveform, Vectorscope, Audio Meters and Direct Disk Recorder in one software package! In addition, you get Luminance and RGB Histograms, RGB and YUV Parades, Multicam. Multi-source support, and pre-buffered recording.

You can use ScopeBox with any QuickTime-supported capture device. DV, HDV, Analog, SDI, and HD-SDI capture cards - ScopeBox plays well with others. You can also playback any QuickTime video from your hard drive. Use ScopeBox to check your final edit before layoff.

We'll demo the software, and announce a special discount for AZFCPUG members!

Parking / Directions

The ASU Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication is on the East side of Central, just 2 blocks North of Van Buren. Take the elevators to the 6th Floor. Parking is available at the 2-story parking garage on E. Polk between Central and 1st Street - Enter on the South Side.

Unfortunately, ASU can only validate parking for the first 20 people who arrive, so if you arrive later, you can expect to pay $3.00/hr for parking. There is also an independently-operated parking lot just across the street, on the North side of Fillmore between Central and 1st Street.

Be aware that as of January 20th, all city parking meters have increased to $1.50/hr., and the meters run until 8pm!

Google Maps is out of date - The Cronkite School shows up as an empty parking lot (!) You can, however, see the 2-story parking garage on Polk:

The Cronkite School has graciously opened their doors to us, so make sure to visit the following website to learn more about the new Downtown Campus, staff and Graduate and Undergraduate programs:

We don't have any expenses so we don't charge any dues or fees.

Everyone's welcome for an evening of sharing regarding video production and FCP in AZ.

This facility is amazing. Here is a video of the school that I did on the grand opening that they had just recently.

Re: AZ Final Cut Pro User Group Meeting: Light rail stop right in front.

I would also like to suggest that if you have the option that you consider taking the Light Rail to the meeting. The Light Rail stops directly next to the building.
