You Might Want To Know This...
by Mitch Ives on May 15, 2008 at 7:29:01 pm

I'm posting this so others don't go through what we've been experiencing...

Since installing FCP 6.0.3 and QT 7.4.5, Livetype is broken on the new 2008 8-core Mac Pro, but works fine on the Intel C2D MBP 17. Both have FCP 6.0.3 and QT 7.4.5 and 10.5.2. Both have had the FCP preferences thrown out to try and repair the problem.

Here's where it gets fun. If I take the .ipr file from the MBP 17 that displays fine in FCP on the laptop and move it to the 8-core tower, the screen is solid black... the same as when I make one in Livetype on the 8-core. Even stranger, the files made on the 8-core that don't work, display fine on the MBP 17.

We've confirmed this problem with several other people... some who run Tiger, not Leopard. Going back to FCP 6.0.2 and QT 7.4.1 will restore LiveType to working condition.

BTW, Apple is aware of this problem.

Re: Update... it's hardware based

I reported earlier that I had developed a problem with anything made in Livetype, since installing FCP 6.0.3 and QT 7.4.5 on our 2008 MacPro 8-core with the Kona 3. Basically, none of the LiveType files on the FCP timeline would show up... they'd appear as black. Several other people have reported similar problems.

Yesterday it looked as though our particular problem appeared to be isolated in the Kona 3 drivers. If I switch off of the Kona 3 Easy setup and use the FCP supplied "DVCPRO HD - 720p24" Easy setup instead, then the Livetype problem goes away on the 2008 MacPro 8-core. All the Livetype files magically reappear on the timeline. This is 100% repeatable by switching back and forth between the stock FCP preset and the Kona 3 preset.

This project was originally created in FCP 6.0.2 & QT 7.4.1 using this same machine and the same Kona 3 where the Livetype files displayed fine. It looked like FCP 6.0.3/QT 7.4.5 changed something that the AJA folks needed to address... but the plot sickens.

Yesterday we determined that it isn't just AJA. A friend of mine with a 2007 Mac Pro Quad is experiencing the same thing since upgrading to FCP 6.0.3/QT 7.4.5. On the strength of our discovery, he removed his Black Magic Intensity Pro from his Mac Pro and now LiveType works properly on that machine as well.

Apple definitely changed something serious in the latest Pro Apps update. In addition to FCP 6.0.3, it included a new plug-in manager, which may be the culprit. But then again, it could all be caused by QT 7.4.5. At least we're making some progress.
