Dave Klee time lapse ?

Dave,
I beleive you did some time lapse with a still camera. What interval did you use to get the great results. I need to doa 10 day time lapse.

Thanks for your help,
Anthony Miles

Hey Anthony, you are correct. Ray and I worked something out with our digital cameras for a construction project a couple years ago, and have been running with it ever since.

Depends what you're looking to time lapse. For construction projects, I've gone as long as 20 minutes when there isn't much activity, and as short as one minute when there's a lot of visible work going on. Flash cards have gotten a lot cheaper lately, so you can really do almost anything.

Feel free to send me a note if you have other questions: Dave@timelapsetech.com. I also put up a website at TimeLapseTech.com (shameless plug). Happy to help if I can!

Dave,
Thanks. Just finished a feature film. Anyway, I need to do a timelapse shot and was looking at using my Canon EOS 10D. I am not finding much in the manual about timed exposures or interval recording. Please feel free to email me or call me or if it is beter it would be great if you wouldn't mind speaking about it at the FCP UG meeting on Wednesday?

My main question is: Is there a way to set it up and leave it for several days in an automatic timed exposure and just change the memory car once a day?

Thanks so much,
Anthony

Just found that I could do remote capture with the laptop and PC connection on the camera. That will get me an image sequence & I know where to go from there. Thanks for your help.

If you have any sugestions that do not rely on a PC, I would be very open to that since I do not really trust computers.

Best regards,
Anthony

Hey Anthony, I'm happy to help/speak about the topic for HOURS on end, so maybe we'll just chat at the next FCP meeting on Wednesday.

It is possible to do what you're doing. Typically, for construction jobs, I'll set up a camera on a timer (hooked up to a battery and solar cell), and if I'm really trying to do things on a budget, I'll go change out the camera memory card every month or so. If I've got some more money to work with, I'll hook up a little system to download out of the camera each night so I don't have to touch the camera.

Long story short, most camera software programs (including Canon) have a setting for interval shooting when the camera is hooked up to the computer. It works, but it has A LOT of limitations. What you really want to do (in my opinion) is hook up a timer to the camera so it takes pictures at a regular interval on its own -- without the computer. And, you've got the right idea on memory, built in is the cheapest and easiest way to go (but you have to be careful not to bump the camera when changing it).

There aren't many places to find timers like this, but I know I have at least one website at home I could send your way. It isn't cheap (maybe $200-$300 with a cable), but it would do the trick.
