Which viewing software to suggest to director with Mac laptop?
by Paul Steinberg on Oct 30, 2009 at 11:57:07 am

I tried this post in the DVinfo forums without success.

I've got a documentary job this weekend and the director would like to use the Nanoflash files for logging purposes. The Sony MXF viewer would would great except he has a Mac laptop and that viewing software is PC only. He doesn't have Final Cut on his laptop so what would be the best solution for him to view the files (either MXF or QT) and log the timecode?

I know that Quicktime is an Apple product so if I save the files at QT's can he view them or is an additional codec required? Would he also be able to see the embedded timecode?

I did see SONY XDCAM EX and VLC media player - Open Source Multimedia Framework and Player would either of those solutions work for him? Unfortunately I don't have a Mac of my own to test these options but I'm sure SOMEONE out there has one and is viewing Nano clips on it.

Thanks in advance,

Viewing is not a problem. I have a JVC HM700 that gives me XDCAM MOV files and then I convert them to MXF with the nano flash free downloadable software File Converter (I actually spoke with the programmer and asked him expressly to include support for HM700 footage)... I don't have a nano but I can easily view this footage with VLC. I don't think you can view timecode (with frames) but minutes and seconds should be enoguh for a rough cut on the field

Thanks Marcello. The hours/min/sec that VLC displays is from the embedded timecode or just the clip duration? Can you scrub back and forth along a clip with VLC?

No.. VLC is not good for scrubbing. I also tested a few other free softwares like Mpeg Streamclip but they don't open MXF. Maybe the best thing is to get a trial version of Adobe Premiere CS4.. hoping the job is only 30 days long! :)

Nuts!

Anyone try use that XDCamEX viewer? Has anyone tried that one on a Mac? Will the Quicktime files play natively on Mac and display embedded timecode.

As I mentioned, I don't have a Mac to test on so can't do any of this leg work myself.

Thx!

For the QT files on a Mac without FC, you may try ffmpgx.
is able to read the MP4 from the EX-1 so is very possible can read the NANO QT files.
