Using Ikan momitor with nanoFlash
by Michael Morcombe on Oct 24, 2009 at 3:02:45 am

Connecting my nano to a HD TV displays both live and recorded images via HDMI, in superb detail, but shows up manual focus errors, especially using the small finder screen of Canon XLH1.

So I have purchased an ikan v5600, but find it will not display anythingat all via the same HDMI connection that works so well to the TV. No image comes up on the ikan screen either as live image while recording (or on standby), nor as playback from the cards in the nanoflash.

When connected to the TV via HDMI, there's a live image while camera is on standby and while recording, when one can compose, focus etc. It seems strange that HDMI to the ikan monitor does not do the same. The camera is PAL, as is the TV, and the ikan is both PAL and NTSC.

The ikan works perfectly when connected by the same HDMI cable to my Canon EOD 50D, both for live viewing and replay.

In summary, the XLH1 connects to the TV, the Canon Eos connects to the ikan, but the nano won't connect to the ikan.

Has anyone successfully used this or similar monitor with the nanoflash (or flash xdr) , either using the HDMI output, or the SDI out ?

If the ikan cannot be used via the nanoflash, can it be used direct from the SDI out of the camera... which I suppose would need a double adapter to take monitor and nano from same outlet?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Michael-
What's the video input format as displayed in the lower left hand corner of the nanoFlash / Flash XDR LCD screen? The iKan monitor does not support 1080p, according to the datasheet.

Best-

Hi Mike

Thanks for the suggestion. Also your post of October 8th re 3:2 pulldown. Nanoflash updates installed, now on version 1.0.112

With XLH1 Mode dial always on HD, the following results:

1, Frame rate dial at F2 ( =24 mode, when HD-SDI reads out on Nano screen as 1080i50 . With PSF in UNchecked and 3:2 pulldown removal checked, the Ikan monitor does work, and gives excellent very fine detailed sharp image, far superior to built in finder screen. Ikan also works on playback (PSF out checked).

The resultant recorded clip is very sharply detailed. Using VLC media player, a single frame (.png) is by that programme's "inspector" given as up to 4.8 mb (depends on detail), image size 1920x1080, colour model RGB.

2. With Frame rate on F2 (=25 mode) , with PSF in checked and 3:2 pulldown UNchecked, all above the same, singkle frame image looks identical in detail and colour, BUT, Ikan monitor does not work, blank black screen. However playback from nano to Ikan does work, seems same colour quality and sharpness as in 1. above.

3. Still with mode on HD as both above, but with frame rate dial on i setting (50i), PSF in unchecked, and the 3:2 pulldown checked , results same as in 1. above, with Ikan monitor working, while a single frame result still appear identical to both of above: seems excellent.

On playback, the new pause facility works, after all of above modes of recording, but occasionally won't return from pause to play, crashes the nano, with restart of the play needed. Seems to happen when pause is used several times in fairly quick succession.

Questions here: (a)is it in this 50i mode actually recording 50 fps, or has it been pulled back to same 24 fps ass in the F2 setting in 1. above? Would be good to have option of faster frame rate is needed.(b) Occasionally when in this "i) rate setting, the image, both on screen and printed, is darker and dull, eg red becomes brown. Seems to be fixed by re-boot of nano , when brighter colours return.

One final query. From day of receipt of my nanoFlash, have not been able to get any response from the audio meters, nor earphone sound out . As the camera is the original XLH1 (not later "S), I don't have embedded sound out, so am only trying mono sound via jack. The same two Sennheiser microphones (mono, "shotgun" type, 1.5v battery) work on the XLH1 (meters ok etc). Not phantom power mikes.

Was hoping the updates might have corrected this, but as I've not seen any mention of this fault it must be my unit or something I'm doing wrong, but have checked menu and can't see how else it might be set.

Best wishes

Michael Morcombe

[Michael Morcombe] "the ikan is both PAL and NTSC"
I think that's OK if you are recording SD.
If you are recording HD in your NANO you need an HD monitor.
The NANO do not downconvert.
