problem with converted QT to MXF with File converter 1.2
by Marcus von Holtzendorff on Oct 23, 2009 at 3:27:54 am

Hello,

We a nanoflash that we use as transfer device. We want to use it with both FCP and Avid MC. We recorded some footage as 140mbit I-frame QT then converted with your utility. The converted MXF cause an error of unsupported resolution when we try to import to Media Composer 4.03

The QT worked fine in FCP and the converted MXF played in VLC (sort of,aspect ration seemed to be detected wrong). Seems like an error in the metadata of the MXF file. We want to keep options open since some students work at home with FCP an others with Avid at our facility, hence recording in QT, buy hope to get the MXF convertion working too.

Any clues??

THanks

Marcus

Hi Marcus,
I think that, at the moment, AVID is limited to 100Mbps Long GOP.
If I'm not wrong it works in Intraframe at both, 140 and 220Mbps.
Best,

We are using I-frame at 140. When recording in mxf, the files work fine in Avid. Issue is we want to use with both Avid and FCP, hence recording in QT (same setting othewise) and then use the coverter to get mxf for avid, so far no love!

Hi Marcus,
i've been using the Converter to rewrap EX-1 QT files for Premier.
It works great.
However I haven't tried with NANO files because I have nobody with AVID or Edius around.
Sure Mike will point you in the right direction.
Best,
rafael

Rafael, I am trying to convert files for Premiere to (from MOV to MXF). Video wrks fine but the 2 mono tracks converted from one stereo track contains just silence and noise alternated every half second. Any idea?

Hi marcello,
I don't think you can pack Stereo audio.
When you use "FC Export to XDCAM" it always ask you set "Two mono channels".
It may be some limitation.

For me it would be fine to have the 1 stereo channel changed in 2 mono channel (like what Final Cut conversion does).. but if I use Convergent Deign utility from my original footage from JVCHM700 (that has a stereo channel) I don't find this option and so.. either I use ConvergentDesign only when I have clips with no sound or I can't use it... which upsets me because it's a nice and fast (and free) utility.. exactly what I was looking for. I repeat.. to have a 2 x mono output in MXF would be fine for me.. but it doesn't work

[Marcello Mazzilli] " footage from JVCHM700 (that has a stereo channel) I don't find this option and so.. either "
Marcello,
Your original footage can not have stereo audio.
Open a clip in QT and Comm-I. Have a look to "Format".
When you "Export to XDCAM" from FC, you need to set the sequence in Two Mono because by default the sequence is Stereo.
The footage it have two mono channels.
With the Convergent-Design Converter shouldn't be problem to re-wrap the original files.

Doing as you said and checking FORMAT in the file info gives me... STEREO 48K
This is what I am saying. Using FinalCut and switching to 2x Mono BEFORE converting works.
While using Convergent Desing File COnverter doesn't (because, I guess, works only with 2xMono footage).
Maybe I should look for a batch way to convert in quicktime stereo files to 2xmono files and then run again a batch to convert them in MXF.. at least until Convergent Design offers audio conversion

That's very curious.
The clips from the EX-1 comes with "Two Mono" audio channels.
Can't you change in the camera so you record Two Discreet channels instead of Stereo?

No.. I checked.. JVC HM700 has no settings for this and gives a stereo channel.. I have to find a way of doing the change with a batch software and Quicktime.

Hi Marcello,
As Tommy points could be problem with the audio with the high data-rate NANO files.
Your files are EX-1, I think they should work.
As I told you I've beenre-wrapping footage from my EX-1 (36Mbps) with the Converter for Premier Pro.
But no idea about the audio because they cared just for the picture.
I may ask them.

[Marcello Mazzilli] ".. I have to find a way of doing the change with a batch software and Quicktime. "
There is a free application from a chap on the CAW that can batch change some QT metadata. Donload here "QTChange".

You can ask Bouke for advise.

No.. my files come from JVC HM700 in XDCAM Video and stereo 16bit 48khz audio... I changed the stereo to mono with Quicktime (still I have to find a batch way of doing it) but I get the same problem. Tommy from Convergent Design is doing some tests with some footage I gave him I think.

I converted the file with quicktime (CTRL + J and changed o 2 mono tracks) but still I get errors in the audio so it's not (only) that.
Pity.

Re: problem with converted QT to MXF with File converter 1.2
by Tommy Schell on Oct 26, 2009 at 3:39:28 pm

Hi,

There's a bug in FileConverter 1.2 in which 140 I-frame and 220 I-frame do not convert quite right.
It's being fixed.

As far as the audio problem, the nanoFlash creates uncompressed audio, 24 bit, 48 khz, 2 channel.
If you don't have something like that for the FileConverter, the audio won't convert right. The converter should take 16 or 24 bit,
0 or 2 channel uncompressed audio.
