Can the nanoConnect help me.
by Riceman on Oct 7, 2007 at 8:56:15 pm

I have a Panasonic AG-HSC1U and am wondering if the little nanoConnect will give me better quality footage then ingesting with FCP's Intermediate codec. Anybody know the answer? Thanks.

Depending on the editing software and hardware you are using the Nano would allow you to capture the HDMI signal from your camera completely digital. If you are using a Mac or PC together with the an HD-SDI capture card I would say yes this is the best all digital real time signal your camera can reproduce. Not sure how else you can work with AVCHD files and I believe your camera uses an on board hardware processor to decompress the AVCHD file into a 1920x1080 uncompressed HD signal.

Thanks Michael,

That sounds nice. I have a MacBook Pro Intel 2.4, and edit in FCP Studio 2, is there anyway to connect to this with the nanoConnect? I am looking for the least expensive option. Also, will this work with footage already recorded, or will I need to record directly to disc?

And one more question, is the quality increase worth the $ spent. I am looking at purchasing an HVX-200 in the near future, or possibly the new Sony camera(i don't recall the name).

No, not that I am aware of. Remember you purchased a cute little camera that a shoe box could ship 4 of. You didn't purchase a professional camera and the Nano Connect is designed for use with a Desktop housing a professional HD-SDI capture card. Please.......... don't get discouraged but you have only scratched the HD surface, and the AVCHD codec is still unknown to most ELD's. If some do work with it they transcode to another codec.

Also, will this work with footage already recorded, or will I need to record directly to disc?

Not sure you can back this up yet in the native format files. I would try an SD DVD or CD to back up and see what happens.

Working with a MBP laptop still leaves out many professional solutions like the Nano Connect. Search for AVCHD advice here at the cow and on your favorite search engine and see how others are dealing with this codec.

BTW the Convergent Design product line is worth the money.

Good Luck

Yes, you are right. This is more of an experimental camera, so I could play around with HD. I plan on picking up an HVX-200 or possibly the new Sony EX camera soon( the only drawback on the Sony is the MPEG2 compression, as far as I can tell, ie. 4:2:0).

Anyway, thanks for the info. I think my money is better spent on the new camera, then trying to get this little guy to do something its not intended to do.

fyi, right now I injest via USB with FCP's "Log and Transfer" and can choose from the Apple Intermediate or ProRes codec. This results in some big files, almost 1 GB per minute. I have not tried, but assume I can back up the original files, which are much smaller, on data DVD. And injest at a later date.
