Audio pops with Avid Xpress Pro HD
by Ben Wilson on Mar 13, 2006 at 9:20:38 pm

We are using an SD Connect box with our Avid Xpress Pro v5.2.1. Every so often, we experience audio popping when trying to playout the timeline. The audio project in Avid is set to locked, 48kHz. After doing a system reset, the audio plays fine. Software version of the SD Connect is 1.1.218 and FW version is 1.19. Has anyone else experienced this issue? Would genlocking the box fix this problem? or is this a "feature" to live with?

Any help or suggestions appreciated.

tnx

Can't say I've ever experienced that...

If you have to reset the system to get it to go away...might it be an issue with the computer?

...unless of course this configuration was running before the SD Connect without issue...does the issue not reappear if the SD Connect is disconnected?

In reviewing my post, I see I was not clear about a couple of things, where I'm hearing the pops and what I'm resetting. My apologies.

Where I'm hearing the pops:
The output of the SD Connect. It sounds like digital audio losing it's word clock reference.

Which system I'm resetting:
The SD Connect. The sound card output of the computer is clean.

I wish I knew more about the data structure of DV video and firewire and how it's being processed inside the SD Connect box. I would then have a better understanding of where I need to look to solve this problem. It could be that resetting the SD Connect every month or so might be the only solution.

Hmmm...I know that the Avid implementation can be tricky for third parties...I wonder if a software upgrade or backslush might do the trick.

Mike Schell should probably weigh in on this one...could you please post the software version currently in the SD Connect?

Thanks

Hi Ben-
This audio popping issue is a known problem with Avid Xpress. The resolution, as I recall, is to set the audio to be 48Khz, locked, stereo. I also recall a setting to not re-sample the audio.

You might need to experiment a bit with the audio settings in Avid, but this is a known issue that can be fixed witht the Avid settings.

Thanks Mike,

but I already have the software set to 48kHz, locked, stereo. I know about that one. The problem is that the unit works fine for about a month or month and a half then the popping starts. The only thing that I have found to make it go away is to do a system reset on the SD Connect. That's why I was wondering if the timing relationship between video and audio from the firewire stream could be slipping over time in the decode process and the system reset clears buffers to start it over from scratch. Simply powering the unit down and powering it back up does not clear the problem.

The box works great otherwise.
