Problem with SD-Connect and analog capture
by Darkness565 on Oct 14, 2005 at 11:17:21 pm

Hi,
I'm a user of SD-Connect (SN 05034675), and, until now, I'm very satisfied about this converter; but, trying analog capture I encounter a problem. Expecially during analog composite capture (from VHS, U-matic end other composite machines) there are color deviations and horizontal jitter expecially on red tones. The resulting quality of this captured video is very poor and inadequate for my work. I tried other DV converters and they are not affected from this problem although they are consumer models (such as Canopus ADVC300 or ADS pyro).
Can you help me? I'm very disappointed from this problem.
Regards.
And.

Hi And.-
OK, a couple of questions:
1) What version of firmware are your running (check under System and About)?
2) Do you use internal or external reference?
3) PAL or NTSC?
4) If you run the video thru a TBC (if you have one) does this fix the problem?

Best-

Hi Mike,
thanks for your prompt answer:

>1) What version of firmware are your running (check under System and About)?

Firmware version 1.12
SW 1.1.198

>2) Do you use internal or external reference?

I use internal reference because I haven't a blackburst generator.

>3) PAL or NTSC?

PAL

>4) If you run the video thru a TBC (if you have one) does this fix the problem?

Yes, I tried out capturing from BetacamSP (Sony BVW75P) and MII (Panasonic AU-W35H) and in these cases all is OK, no color deviation or jitter, cause they have an internal TBC.
However I have to capture even from machines without internal TBC, such as VHS and U-matic, and I don't have an external TBC (On SD-Connect's specs I read that this unit has an internal TBC and frame synchronizer, providing itself for these functionalities).
I can't understand why other cheaper consumer converter that I tried out, are not affected from this problem.

How Can I solve this?

Regards
And.

Hi Mike,
no news for me?
I am forced to buy an external (expensive) TBC and a Blackburst Generator to work with SD-Connect?

Thanks again,

And.

Hi And-
Try downloading the latest version of firmware: 1.1.217, usign the "get version" option in the update menu.

Also, when did you purchase the converter box?

Best-
Mike

Hi Mike-
thanks for your suggestion.

I upgraded both Software and Firmware to vers. 1.1.217 and 1.19 repectively, but, unfortunately, the problem persist, and the horizontal lines are still there expecially on red and blue tones.

I bought the SD-Connect on June,29 of this year from your dealer "HW Digital Graphics" (Germany); SN of my SD-Connect is: 006035023B77

Mike, are there any other ways to fix this problem except using an external expensive TBC?

Best Regards.
And.

Hi And
Please send an e-mail to me (Mike@convergent-design.com) with your contact info and we'll get you a newer box to test. The latest boxes have a new version of the video decoder which should help the problem.

Best-
Mike

Hi Mike,
after your e-mail of October 26, I have no news from you.
What's happening? Is the new unit ready for me?
And let me know what I have to do with the one I have.
Waiting for your news.
Best regards.
