 | Xsan without a Fiber Switch?

I was looking at the Promise VTrak x30 Series which has a Quad 8GB controller and was wondering if I could hook up 3 Workstations to it plus 1 Metadata controller and make it work? Of course we would have a backup MC but just curious if it's absolutely necessary to have a switch?

It will work. All Xsan (StorNext) needs to function is for the clients to have a FC connection to the LUNs and the Ethernet-based metadata network for the portmapper daemon to coordinate access.
Now, whether or not it is a good idea to roll like that, that's another story.
Best,
Andy

In this case - why would you say it is not a good idea?

It just means you have zero expansion capacity, and that includes a redundant MDC, more clients, or more storage. You'll wind up needing a switch upon any expansion plans beyond three clients and one MDC. There aren't any stability issues apart from the risks associated with running on just the single MDC.
Best,
Andy

Figured that's what you were getting at.
