Sync drifts in Final Cut Pro with Xsan
by Ian Liuzzi-Fedun on Apr 10, 2012 at 3:20:39 am
I am using FInal Cut Pro with Xsan and the sync is constantly drifitng between audio and video. I have read elsewhere that people have had this issue but I haven't found any of my solutions. My Xsan seems to be all setup correctly and I am only working with DV footage. Any ideas?

No problem here on Final Cut Pro 7 - been using it for years without this sort of issue. What are your software (XSAN and FCP) and OS versions for your host machine and your MDC?

Also, what hardware are you using to monitor video and audio? We used AJA iO up until recently. We're now using Matrox MX02 hardware and neither had this problem.

MDC is on 10.7.2 while clients are on 10.6.8. I now seem to think that it is the Kona LHe card in one of my clients as it doesn't happen with another computer and the LHe has tons (relative to non) of complaints about out of sync audio and video.

Is the client in question an older Mac Pro? Those had selectable PCIe slot lane widths and the Konas require a settings change in that regard. Not doing so manifests in weird sync drift.

Okay, so it "should" work. Is the audio being monitored using the Kona or using the system sound? Obviously, monitoring through the Kona should keep it in sync. And what about the video? What's being used to monitor? Can you output a file from this system and try playing it back on the working system you mentioned? If the output is out of sync, it's a system level problem. I had some freaky problems (though not the one you're having) with FCP 7 because I had a trial version of FCP X on the same system. Once I ditched FCP X and back-slushed to the Pro Apps 1.0 update (bit of a PITA), it cleared up. However, that system is now locked down as far as upgrades. FWIW

I have a nit on those kona drivers. I was at a customer site a while back and they were having dump to tape issues. The tape was being fed by Kona cards. The customer had a mix of Kona cards.
We decided to upgrade the drivers. We went to the Aja site and downloaded what we thought were the right drivers and installed them. After a reboot, the problem was still there. I just happened to check the kext (with kextstat) and spotted that it was the old one! The wrong driver code had installed with no trouble. There was no error saying "hey! You don't have one of these cards". You should check your kona driver and be sure it's the right one.
