Now you can solve my next problem:

So there is a port on the back of the Xserve Raid units for a serial connection to a UPS. I don't have nearly as many UPS units as I do Xserve Raids. I want to somehow be able to split/multiply the serial signal coming out of the UPS - know of any hardware that will do this? Additionally, I see no indicators in the raid software that speaks to UPS - how would I know if the connection is working?

Well, this is a little bit of a rabbit hole, but have a look at this older thread and see if it gets you pointed in the right direction:

And, I couldn't respect myself if I didn't say it: I love those old Apple Xserve RAIDs, but I don't trust them anymore -- too hard to get parts and drives. If you're using those old boxes, look at an upgrade. Soon. And don't trust them to keep your data safe.

I just invested 2 grand on them from ebay and there is nothing like them. I am getting parts in case they break and am planning on using them for a full SAN.

Coolio - I'll try it out.

Is it that crucial to have the units shutdown properly as long as the file system is unmounted at the server end?

Depends on your definition of "that." Honestly, I haven't known many people who successfully got the graceful RAID shutdown working. If the volume is inactive (unmounted) before you lose power to the RAIDs and you have cache modules installed, you're in a decent place.

My concerns now about graceful shutdown of the RAIDs are more hardware-failure based because they're older boxes. You can survive without it, but I've seen drive and controller failures most often after non-graceful shutdowns.
