Hi,

Here is the situation:
-Server 1 (should be address book, login accounts, calendars, mail, etc) also should be secondary (standby) xsan controler for metadata
-Server 2 just xsan primary controller

I managed to setup Xsan on Server2 only when server1 is shutdown
If I turn ON Server1 Xsan goes down, shutdown Server1 all is nice again.

There are no IP conflicts, they are on a separate networks, they can ping each other fine, share files ...

As an earlier test setup I ran everything from Server1 (mail, chat, calendars and Xsan) and I could not authenticate Server2 either as a client or controler
Looked like Xsan went down as soon as I booted Server2

Any ideas?

Is there anything I should do when I introduce second server into network? Also I could see both servers from the client, looks like they don't tollerate each other

Also I rechecked Xsan administration guide http://images.apple.com/xsan/docs/Xsan_2_Admin_Guide_v2.3.pdf
On page 21 it says

Xsan: Select “Configure as Xsan Metadata Controller or Client.”
Xsan Computer Type: Select “Configure as Standby Xsan Metadata Controller.”

This thing never showed up anywhere during installation... installed two servers today, haven't seen that one pop up.

Thanks,
B.

Hey Borko, if you set the servers up separately, it's possible your two metadata controllers have configurations that are conflicting with each other.

I would:
-Make sure all your Xsan data was backed up (if you need any of it)
-Uninstall Xsan on Server 1
-Make sure Server 1 doesn't show up anywhere in the Xsan interface when you are using Xsan admin (make sure Server 1 is definitely not part of the Xsan, and if it shows up, remove it forcibly)
-Make sure the Xsan works fine this way on other computers, including Server 2
-Re-install Xsan on Server 1
-Join Server 1 to the Xsan as a client (NOT a controller at first)
-Make sure Server 1 can use the Xsan, mount the volume, and is happy (along with all other computers on the Xsan)
-Promote Server 1 to be a backup Metadata controller

If you've already tried this procedure, then I'd start looking at networking issues (both public and private).

Good luck and post back with questions.

Dave

Hi,
I figured it out.

Procedure that I used:
- Create xsan (admin) accounts on Server1, Server2, client (just to make life easier)
- Install Xsan on Server1 (create San with one client and one controller)
- In Server app on Server1 enable Device management (remember directory server admin username and pass, you will need it in next step)
- Join Server2 to Server1 Network Account Server (User and Groups -> Join..., use directory server admin username/pass)
- From Server1 Xsan management add Server2 to Xsan. Now you can authorize it without problems)
- Make Server2 Controller

Easy... after couple of days trying :)

I still can not make either controller Primary or Secondary
It now works, tried turning off servers just to see if it breaks... it does not :)

Speed is good (test disks are older), group permissions are great, overall much better control than what we have now.

B.
