Dear all,

I am evaluating a XSAN environment and have got 3 Nexsan Sata-Boy´s with 2 controllers / 4Gbit FC each.

What I would like to ask is - how do I have to configure the file system to get the most throughput out of the system? I know I can just give it several tries, but I hope to get some inspiration for the testing from this huge pool of experience and knowledge around. The goal is to achieve the best possible performance for huge files ( >50GB)

I thought about configuring 3x Raid 5 arrays on each Sata-Boy:

Boy1 arrays: A1 A2 A3
Boy2 arrays: B1 B2 B3
Boy3 arrays: C1 C2 C3

Stripe group 1 containing: A1 B1 C1
Stripe group 2 containing: A2 B2 C2
Stripe group 3 containing: A3 B3 C3

Or is it better if I do it like this?

Stripe group 1 containing: A1 A2 A3
Stripe group 2 containing: B1 B2 B3
Stripe group 3 containing: C1 C2 C3

Or is all this wrong and it would be best to simply put ALL arrays in ONE stripe group?

Thanks a lot in advance!

An Xsan represents a lot of components working together seamlessly. Unless you have a ton of experience, you're going to get the best result by going by the book.

Treat your Nexsan units like they are Promise chassis:

To get the result you want, it will be important to decide on a good block allocation size. You'll then use that to find your stripe breadth. Take a look at the link below and check out the section on file system configuration. If you need to move large files, start by experimenting with settings for Video.
