Linking SanBoxes?
by Max Kaiser on Nov 1, 2009 at 11:59:55 pm

Hi all,
I'm considering adding an extra xraid to my xsan system but I need more FC ports. Right now I have a 10 port 2gb sanbox. If I want to add like 6 more ports (2 for xraid, 2 for new mdc, and 2 for new computer) do I need to buy a 20 port sanbox or can I buy another 10 port and link them together somehow?

Thanks!
Max

hmm... you are investing in "relic" technology, you don't want Indiana Jones to be your reseller :)

but seriously, 2gig is super slow compared to what is out there, and compared to what will be out there in short order, although you might get a killer deal on used switches, just not so sure how they hold up over time (light will degrade on those things)

Technically I have always been able to link my switches together by plugging a fibre cable between them and making the two ports "E" ports. However, I have not done this on the older 10 port switches. You should call Qlogic and ask them.

Any RAID you purchase next will be 4gig, your servers will be super fast and also 4gig, but you will be placing older 2gig in between all of that... I would definitely get a good budget in mind and see if you can piece together a complete 4gig based solution and speed up your world, not to mention make it redundant and more reliable.

One additional consideration with the QLogic 1400 10 port models is that they only support one E-port per switch. See here under "Technical Specs":

http://www.qlogic.com/Products/SAN_products_FCS_san1400.aspx

This could potentially be a performance bottleneck.

The 5000 series QLogic switches can have multiple E-port links via XPAK (10Gb), or from the SFP (1/2/4Gb) ports.
