RE: xSan Maintenance and Operation

I recently scored an assistant editing job utilizing the xSan storage system. It's a relatively unfamiliar system to me, and I was wondering if someone could give me some general pointers on how to upload files onto the system, as well as retrieve them, maintaining good storage practices and stuff like that. Any information anyone could give would be great!

I've worked with a server before, which was a relatively simple operation. All we had to do was go to the "Go" tab on the finder menu and then click "Go To Server," then it was a matter of finding the right disk to upload our footage to. Does xSan have this level of integration, or are doing things on it a little more complicated? If anyone knows anything, let me know!

Thanks,

Taylor

If you are going to be the one in charge of the XSAN you should have your company send you to one of the XSAN classes. The ones I know about right now are the V.2 consulting classes. There are probably others, so you should look around. There is too much information to post here on how to maintain an XSAN, the classes will really help you get an "overall" picture.

http://www.vdot2.com/ (solid training classes here)

The basics of XSAN is that the volume sits on your desktop as if you have a firewire drive mounted (but much faster). If it is configured correctly the drive will auto mount every time you start up, there is no need to "connect to server." again, if it is setup correctly, it should be a very simple system that requires little maintenance, just an eye to watch capacity, but that goes for any RAID based system.

Taylor -
you have a great opportunity in front of you. You should do everything you can to get proper training, and learn how to do this.

With that said, this is my favorite Creative Cow post of the month.
If I knew who your boss was, I would drive over there, and slap him in the face.
