Mental ray renders dark

Let me just preface this by saying I'm a noob... go figure. Anyhoo I'm fumbling through all the tutorials I can find but when I try to use the mental ray renderer it is really dark, really really dark. I set up a daylight system right along with the tutorial and did exzactly as he says and it looks like night almost. I know there's much more for me to learn in this amazingly vast program but any ideas as to why. A setting I'm missing perhaps?
