ALPHA MAP TEXTURE MADNESS!!!
by joel jackson (creative bloc) on Feb 27, 2008 at 12:18:54 am

I need to map a topographic rendering of a state onto an extruded mesh that is shaped like the state.

However, when I bring in my PSD file (with alpha of the state) into the opacity map rollout (so just the state comes in and not the area around it) I cannot get max to see the alpha. I've tried tiff, jpeg, pict, tga, psd and other files and never an alpha!!!The option to select mono channel output is not selectable and image alpha is not selectable under alpha source.

What am I doing wrong that MAX WILL NOT SEE the alphas in my map files???

Help please. It's driving me crazy...

Joel

I think its some kind of bug in 3dsmax.

what I do to get around it is save an alpha
channel separately as a black and white image
then load that into the opacity map slot.

not the most elagant solution but it works.

Stupid bug that needs to be fixed. I've been a long time 3ds max man but reasons like this are forcing me to transition to C4D

You don't have to make a black and white. I'm used to this so I export the image as a PNG with alpha and load it into diffuse and then copy down to the opacity map. Check respective alpha options.
Note that it will recognize alpha when you load an individual layer so you can still keep everything in one file.
