moving an object across a plain

moving an object across a plain

i am trying to animate chess pieces and am having a hard time with the pieces sinking below the board and am not sure how to deal with this i need the pieces to stay just above the board and not look like they are sinking

Im kinda assuming that your plane is flat on the zero axis.. If you remove all your Z-axis keyframes in the graph editor it will only keep the left and right animation, not the up and down.
