Hi everyone,
I want to produce a realistic rendering of a glass bottle for a student competition. Can anybody tell me how to reach this?

You'll definitely need an excellent renderer for this project. Max's built in renderers are not optimal for producing realisitic looking glass. Check out FinalRender Stage-1 or Brazil:

www.cebas.com

www.splutterfish.com

If you can't get to using one of these, then you'll have to learn Mental Ray and find out if there is internal refraction in glass material.
