We're doing some research for an upcoming broadcast series.
I'm wondering if it's possible to record a pencil-cam or webcam directly to a firestore. I'm guessing the webcam would need to have a firewire connection. Am I right?
If it's not possible, would anyone have suggestions for recording 8-10 hours days in a canoe (preferably tapeless).

If the camera is sending a true DV single it should work. You would set it up as non-controllable and start and stop the recording on the Firestore unit.
8 hours of DV would be about 110GB. The problem you are going to have is battery power you will need a external pack or several batteries to swap out. The extended 3 hour battery gives me between 90-120 minutes on my FS-100.

Oh, just to be clear, HDV is not supported on the FS100. You haven't mentioned it but I wanted to make sure. I'm pretty there is a firestore that does support HDV just not the FS100
