We have the FS-100 and a HVX200. Right now, I know we can play back files recorded on the Firestore on the HVX built-in LCD. But I can't get it to go out to an external monitor. Is there a way to do this? Or is it possible, through some converter to play a file directly from the Firestore to a monitor?
Thanks,

Unfortunately, when you play back from a device connected to the FireWire port on the HVX200, it does not allow HD monitor output over component analog. I do believe it is possible to monitor out from the S-Video port (down-converted).

Hope that helps,

Matt

Thanks Matt,
My question is, is there a way to view files directly off the Firestore, without being connected to the HVX200?

Yes connect your HVX composite or SVHS output to a monitor, then playback directly from the firestor, I did a shoot doing this works fine. Just as Matt suggested in his original reply to you.

Sorry that's a NO there, you need to be connected to the HVX

It seems to me the FS-100 needs to be upgraded to include an HD output port...either component, hdsdi or something...

Don't see this anytime soon does anyone else?

I'm wondering if you had an a/d firewire converter (such as one from Canopus or something) that would take the firewire signal from the Firestore to the converter which would then convert it to HD analog, or even just a composite. Just so if you were shooting, and you wanted to see the image on a bigger monitor than the lcd display, especially if you didn't have the camera connected anymore.

I think a set of outputs would work well. Although it would probably make the form factor a little larger.

I do not believe any external DVCPRO HD -> analog or HD-SDI converter boxes exist. If you are aware of one, I would like to know about it.

Unfortunately, this is not an easy thing to do. This would require a DVCPRO HD decoder chip which is not readily available.

So this is probably why this chip is not in the hvx200 itself. Maybe we should be asking for the camera to have this play out capabilities not the firestore. then again the hvx is already equiped with a component hd out. If I'm not mistaken it does output a play back hd feed from p2 media just not the external firewire fs-100. right?

still this seems to be a pretty critical issue. in the meantime I'll make due with the svideo output but that's not very impressive.

yes you can output playback from a P2 card into HD monitors via component

One alternative to view the footage pretty quickly is to shoot in the "new" Quicktime format (w/ Firestore firmware 3.0) - hook up the FS-100 to a laptop and import the clips directly from the firestore into FCP - with NO DOWNLOAD TIME. The clips play back via shortcut off the Firestore drive. This would definitely come in handy if you needed to view 30mins. to 1 hour+ of footage that you've just shot - viewing a large amount of data, quickly.

(Note: if one is using a FS-100 w/ the HVX-200, and with FCP, I don't know why one would ever want to record in the P2 format again! . . . now that you can shoot PN on the FS-100.)
