G-RAID2 1.5TB odd noise on start-up
by Edward Koehler on Oct 30, 2009 at 2:48:06 pm

My G-Raid2 drive arrived new with a loud fan, and G-Tech replaced the fan for me back in April with no problems. Excellent service and fast turn around. Gene Gilbert helped me out on here with that.
Now the fan has gotten louder again (perhaps from dust) and I'm getting a loud and worrisome noise from my G-Raid2 on start-up. It's as the fan motor tries to spin up to speed and then seems to just spin wildly for a second, stops, then tries to spin up to speed again and spins wildly, stops, etc. It doesn't always happen, but when it occurs it spins wildly for three to about 12 times in a row before mounting.
Is this motor noise originating from the fan, or is it in anyway indicative of an impending failure?
I'm in the middle of an important project and I'll spring for another drive for back-up if that is the case.
Look forward to your reply.

Hi Edward,

Does the drive take longer to mount? Does it sound like the drive is spinning up/down, or do you think it is the fan? It sounds like you may have a bad power supply. Contact us and we can get a new one out to you.

Regards,

Gene Gilbert

Thanks for the reply, Gene.

The noise seems to come from the area of the fan. I can hear the drive spin up and it sounds normal. At the moment the fan is quiet as well.

Thing is, I leave the drive and my system powered up almost all the time. In the past 6mnths dust had gathered in the fan, which I believe made it noisy. I disconnected the drive and gave it a burst of canned air, reconnected to the system and powered up. The fan still seemed noisy at first, and that is when it started making the wild motor spin noises. I was able to replicate the same symptoms for a few times in a row, then decided not to invite trouble and have left it powered on and mounted since then.

Now the fan is noticeably quieter, still just a little buzz but I can live with it.

I'll give you guys a ring anyway to get your opinion. Thanks again.
