G-RAID3 dismounts unexpectedly, causes system freezes-Repair is taking waaaay too long!
by Gabor Szitanyi on Oct 16, 2009 at 5:48:49 pm

Finder, other apps. freeze. Even though the drive is still on desktop - all applications that need to access the drive freeze. When double clicking on the Icon of the drive, a finder window opens but none of the contents are visible. The drive at this point cannot be repaired or verified by DiskUtility - and Disk Warrior can't do anything with it. All apps are frozen at this point, only spinning beach ball - in fact when DiskWarrior is forced quit, it actually never quits and cannot even be restarted. Same happens to DiskUtility and Finder as well.

After a forced shot-down the G-RAID3 mounts as normal - all the files are there, verification works, but it will crash as described above - or suddenly an error / warning message appear about a dismounted disk. In that case the drive has disappeared from the desktop.

I connected the G-RAID3 via all available connections to my laptop, FW800 / eSata Card etc. - with the same results.

Very disappointed. I have noticed other users having similar problems, in fact this has been a problem with G-RAIDS since the beginning.

OK, Got an RMA number and I sent it in for repair - they acknowledged receiving it on September 16.
( I indicated on the submission form that the data on the drive need not be saved - just to ensure a quick turnaround )
"We have received the items that you returned. Please see below for your repair case summary.
Case Number: CS371834
Gtech Part#: GR3T 35/1TB
If you have sent your product(s) for repair, please note the standard turnaround time for repair is 5 to 10 working days..."

It's been ONE MONTH today. I have sent an email inquiring about the status of the repair on October 5th. I got an automated reply with no relevant information at all.

Can I get some love? Gene? Anyone? Hello?

OK, so I have not received any response from anyone here, so I called the tech support number for the first time today. After much classical music, I nice gentleman with a very heavy accent picked up the phone. He acknowledged that my G-RAID3 has been in their custody longer than their "normal" or "usual" 10 Days it would take them to fix a problem. He explained that they just changed to a "new system" and the delay was due to that transition, but the "new system" works now, and said my drive will ship out in 2-3 business days.

I'm not sure what the "new system" means, but I find it a very strange excuse. Anyone heard this before? I know the company has been bought several times this past year - but I fear that instead of a major infusion of capital and capacity the opposite seems to be happening. Does not inspire confidence in the reliability of the hardware nor in the support that should be the brands main asset. I hope that with their market share expanding the quality of the product will not be inversely affected.

I have been using their products for years and I have been recommending them to others. I am holding off on doing both for the time being....

I no longer recommend G-Tech to others. They don't respond to requests for drive repair thru their
site form. There are much better and cheaper alternatives available now.

Hi Gabor,

Your drive has been repaired. As we spoke about on the phone, it took some time to get it to fail. We've replaced the controller board and tested it. You should receive your drive early next week.

Regards,

Gene Gilbert
