1 TB RAID2 bad controller board?
by Trevor Cable on Oct 12, 2009 at 10:47:30 pm

Greetings smart people,
I have a 1 TB RAID2 that is out of warranty and the drives appeared to fail. The unit would unmount itself after a couple of minutes when connected to my MacPro tower. Unfortunately while I was pulling everything off it failed completely and I could no longer get it to mount on any machine. The data is backed up else where so no big loss. Just time.

Figuring the drives failed I pulled each of the drives out and connected them to my mac, formatted them and they work great. But when I put them back in the RAID2 box I get nothing.
Two questions:
1) Is there a way to test the controller board?
2) What are the internal dip switches for?

Thanks for any answers at all.

Nope. Not the controller board. I have three of these units so after pulling things apart and playing with the dip switches to see what they do I swapped the power supply. Now it's all back up and running. I find it crazy however that I lost two power supplies in one week. I use a decent UPS on all of my hard drives.

These drives have lasted 3 years and that is a lot longer than I expected. I am glad to find that it is the power supply. I just ordered a couple of newer units.

Regarding the dip switches: I have found that by connecting one switch that was unused I now have two separate drives. Putting it back how it was RAIDed them together. I may swap one of the drives with a spare 1 TB drive and have 1 500GB drive and one 1 TB drive. Handy.
