G Speed 2TB, E-Sata, Snow Leopard issues
by Larry Wheeler on Sep 29, 2009 at 4:41:50 pm

I recently made the jump to snow leopard on my Macbook pro 17 with expresscard. (2.6Ghz 2008 Model) I have been editing with my G Speed eS 2TB for a long time, with never a problem. That all changed with the Snow Leopard upgrade. The Dynex e-sata card that uses the Silicon 3132 controller is currently extinct in Snow Leopard. To get around this, rather quickly I bought a "Best Connectivity" eSata card for it, that worked. It uses the JMicron JMB360 drivers. That card works wonderfully with my other eSata drives (Fantom Drives), however, it doesn't appear to work with the G drive. None of the drives mount, and only 1 seems to light up with this card, the top bay. A look in disk utility shows only one drive appearing, as a raid slice. This is true, even when I boot from 10.5.8 , via a usb clone drive to boot from. Under 10.5.8 the old Dynex card works, as it should. Through this, I can still access, and use my G Drive, but that is my only way so far. I was hoping you may be able to shed some light on this particular problem. With Snow Leopard, I have everything the way I want it, finally, except for this... Any guidance would be appreciated! I have already emailed Gene Gilbert, as well, hoping he can shed some light on this.

Hi Larry,

It sounds like the eSATA card you purchased may not support port multiplication. This is how the computer sees all the drives in the enclosure. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Hmm, so the dynex card is out, as well as the "best connectivity" card. Does anyone here know an expresscard eSata card that works with a G Speed eS, and Snow Leopard?

Hi Larry

We would recommend the Sonnet Tempo Pro for your Macbook Pro. We have found that it gives good performance, and it works with our eSATA products. On their website it states that it is Snow Leopard tested. Please let me know if you have any questions.

For me, the Sonnet Pro eCard works fine with a G-Drive Q and SL
