G tech 1T drive unmounting itself
by kate mckenna on Sep 11, 2009 at 12:31:01 am

Hello!
I use 2 G-Tech 1T external hard drives for photo shoot backups. I generally sync them (one at a time) at the end of the day with the shoot from that day. I've been doing this for months and countless pairs of external hard drives (probably 20 at this point).

I just go two new 1T external G tech hard drives and after about 10 minutes of being mounted, one unmounts itself, without fail. I am using the 800FW ports. One is connected directly to my Mac Pro, the other is connected to the first external drive. I've never had a problem before, but I did a bunch of testing and it seems the drive that is NOT directly connected to the computer is the one that unmounts itself. I noticed the power plug is different and was wondering if something else changed or if anyone else is having this problem, or even some suggestions.

Thanks a lot,
Kate

I have the exact same problem. It is a G-Tech drive that I've used non-stop for months, being my main drive at the office that I work off of exclusively from my MacBook Pro.

In wrapping the job up, I brought the drive home and the drive unmounted itself after about 30 minutes while connected to my MacPro desktop. THEN it wouldn't re-mount. Restarted drives, computers, switched out 800 for 400 cables, the whole 9 yards.

It mounts perfectly, still, to my laptop. I can get it to mount to my desktop eventually, by letting it sit there for about 20 minutes and then it shows up. But once I start using it, it unmounts itself again after about 10 minutes. This is a major problem as I need to back up 92Gb of files off of it to my desktop computer.

Every time it unmounts, it is transferring files -- first time was rendering in After Effects, frame by frame, taking much longer to create a file than directly copying files through the finder. Maybe it reaches a certain amount of info and bails?

Hi Bill,

I'm sorry to hear about your problems with your G-DRIVE. How long have you had the drive? Is it something that just started happening? Please contact me at eugene.gilbert@hitachigst.com and we can go over your case in more detail.

Hi Gene,
I wrote you an email about 10 days ago or so. I haven't heard anything from you, however. I have good faith that this is an over sight and that you simply aren't trying to get this offline and out of the forum.

Thanks,

Kate

Hi James,

Are you saying that the Macbook Pro works fine, but not your Mac Pro? Are you using the same cables and ports?

Yes, using the same cables and same ports.

On Mac Pro getting a red error message something to the effect of "error, drive has been removed without being ejected" when the drive randomly, unexpectedly unmounts itself.

Also on a different mac pro, the drive unmounts when the computer goes to sleep.

2 current generation 1 TB G drives we are having these problems with. I am going to attempt to return to Tekserve here in NYC where we purchased them from. However, I am wary of getting the same drives again, because these problems seem to be quite prevalent.

I would like to know what the cause of the problems is and what is being done to correct them moving forward. I don't feel confident getting replacement G drives knowing that this has not been resolved.

Hi Kate,

I'm sorry to hear about your problems. Does it only happen to the 1 drive, or does it happen if you swap which drive is at the end of the chain? If you like, contact me at eugene.gilbert@hitachigst.com and we can go over your case in more detail.

Hello Gene,
Thanks for the response! It happens even when I switch the drives. Either one will unmount itself after about 10 minutes.

I will email you ...
Kate

Hello,
Thanks for getting back to me. In response to your email:

"Hi Kate,
I'm sorry for the delay in responding, I thought I had responded on the Cow. You mentioned that they have different power supplies, can you describe them? Also, do you have the serial numbers for your drives? Do you always daisy chain your drives? You are probably going to need to send the drive(s) in, but I want to see what I can do before that, and I apologize again for the delay.
Regards,
Gene Gilbert "

Misunderstanding on the "different power supplies." What I meant was that it seems the actual power cord is different on these drives than previous ones. Leading me to believe things have been changed with the drive, and perhaps why g-techs have worked fairly reliably in the past, and not anymore.
Serials are MS05BEZK and MS0597BK, part # 99300-13103-001. If possible, I really need to avoid sending the drives anywhere. I'm sure that sounds ridiculous but right know they are my two backups for current jobs and are about 75% full. This also means I am in the market for new hard drives.

Suggestions anyone?

Kate

Kate,

I hate to say this - if you can still access your data on your G-drive Q 1TB, transfer the data immediately onto another drive (another brand preferably). From what I'm reading on these forums and from my own experiences with G-drive Q's, there are issues with the "Q" product line. I also have a MBP where I use multiple drives (up to 3) from G-Technology in a daisy-chain. All three has failed at least once within the first 4 months of use. Last night I just submitted an RMA request for a Q 750GB that has failed for the third time since I bought it in May. Fortunately, I haven't lost any current data (thought I did lose my Time Machine archives on a Q - 1TB that is still at G-Tech being repaired). I'm in the precess of moving to another brand. I hope I can get my money back...

Good luck!!!
