GSpeed eS: swapping enclosure for the new quieter version
by Andy Taplin on Jul 15, 2009 at 11:16:13 am

I've got a GSpeed eS which I bought 18 months ago. It's too noisy to have on the desk so I've built a ventilated enclosure for it which has cut down the noise by around 50% but it's still much noisier than my MacPro.

I notice that the the GSpeed eS is now advertised as 'whisper quiet' so I thought great I'll get an upgrade to the new enclosure. However my reseller here in the UK has just told me that G-Tech will not supply an upgrade path to the new enclosures or even sell one at full price without a set of drives!

This is crazy. I just want a quieter enclosure so I can here the audio better when editing. There's plenty of competition in this product area - perhaps G-Tech would like to respond before I go out and buy a competitor product.

Hi Andy,

Sometimes the older enclosures may exhibit a little more noise than usual. Go to our website and fill out the RMA form, and make sure you check the box for Europe support. You can go here: http://www.g-technology.com/Support/Support.cfm?Loc=Contact

Gene

Thanks for your reply.

I contacted tech support and I've copied their response below:

Hi Andy,
Thanks for your support enquiry,
I'm afraid it is not possible to buy enclosure on its own. The only thing I was going to suggest is fan exchange, but after double checking, it is not possible to retro-fit the fan.
You can always purchase new unit without the Raid Card Controller.
I'm realy sorry I can not help on this occasion.

I can't understand why you would not sell a new enclosure to an existing customer. This is classic poor customer service, typical of lot's of company once they get to a certain size and perceived level of success.

I'm sure you don't really care but you've now lost me as a customer. I will not be buying any more G-Tech products ( I have 4 other G-Tech drives and would have purchased several more).

Hi Andy,

I'm working on getting you taken care of. What date did you purchase the drive?

Hi Gene

Thanks for that, I bought the G-Speed eS around the middle of November 2007.

You can email me directly from now on if you wish: andy@peninsulafilms.com

Hi Gene

As it's around 6 weeks since you agreed to look into this for me I thought I'd chase you up. Any news?

Andy
