PROBLEM: G-Drive mini will not mount

I purchased a 320 gb g-drive mini about 4 weeks ago at my local apple store. I connect this to my Macbook Pro via Firewire 800 for storing my iPhoto and iTunes libraries . About two weeks ago I decided to buy the 5 volt adapter as it seemed to be using too much power from my laptop, making it hot and performance lagging. The drive works fine and mounts when power is the external power is connected and FW800 or USB is plugged in.
However, in some cases I am not near a power outlet with the g-drive and thus want to connect it just via FW800, the USB bus supplying the power from my laptop. THis is where my issues arises, ever since buying the external power supply the g-drive mini WILL NOT mount nor connect via FW800. What is going on here? Thank you for your help.

Yes, the drive will mount through FW800 or any other method (FW400, USB) when the power adapter is plugged in. However, when the power adapter is not plugged in the drive does not mount through FW800 or FW400 or USB, although the light remains a steady on.

My drive has done the exact same thing, it was working fine connected via firewire 400/800 to my main machine. I recently went on a trip with my laptop where it only had a usb port, and I had to use the USB/Power cable to access it, when I returned I was no longer able to mount the drive in my old configuration with the firewire 400/800 to my desktop, I used a few different cables and computers, and it wouldn't mount anywhere.
I will also contact G-Tech to get this repaired, I just wanted to say that this exact thing had also happened to me.
