G Drive Q not mounting
by James Haefner on Jun 18, 2009 at 2:13:55 pm

Hello All,

Workstation is a MACBOOK Pro, 10.5.6, FCP 6.0.5, and my external drive is G Drive Q 1TB

Things have seem fine till this morning

FCP froze, I forced Quit, Ejected the Drive, The drives Icon disappeared off of desktop, I shut off the drive and the message appeared that I removed the drive wrong.

Now I powered back-up, tried everything for scratch and the drive is not mounting.

Please! Any and all help greatly appreciated. Thank you.

James,

If you have DiskWarrior, try rebuilding the directory and that may possibly repair it so that your drive mounts again. DiskWarrior is a great utility to have.

Re: G Drive Q not mounting
by Daniel Hidalgo on Jul 2, 2009 at 5:02:43 am

JUST had the exact same thing happen to me, same Macbook Pro and 1TB G DRIVE Q set up, mounted fine at first, tranfered 250GB onto it took 3.5 hours, then closed all apps and it would not unmount. After 1 hour, I turned off the G DRIVE Q, and now it will not re-mount.

Tried the DiskWarrior, version 4, failed to even recognize anything other than my internal HD on my Macbook Pro.

Here is the weird thing, Disk Utility recognized a "G-TECH" drive, but will not allow me to do anything to it, and refuses to eject the "G-TECH" icon, and yet my desktop had NO icon on it for the G DRIVE Q when plugged in, and I tried all ports, nothing.

Now what? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Daniel,

Sorry to hear about your problem. It could be a couple of things, DiskWarrior will usually take care of directory problems, but yours sounds like a drive problem. You will need to send it in. Go to our website and fill out the RMA form here: http://g-technology.com/Support/Support.cfm?Loc=Contact. If you want to, you can put it to my attention in the RMA, and mention this thread.

just had the same problem it seems. open my project , things are going smooth (as smooth as any edit can be) then it freezes. I try to restart everything, but can't eject the drive. So I have to (unfortunately) just turn the graid off. When I restart, it won't mount! what is up?

Thanks ,
Gina

I have been in contact with a MAC Tech Support Rep. I think we isolated the problem to be the External Drive.

I worked on some projects on the Boot Drive as well as a Second G drive, and I had no issues.

Still working on it...

so, yeah, i've bought a new g-raid. It's a g-raid 3 versus the Q. All other versions of the G-raid (we have 2 and 3) seem to be working fine. Now, I'm having problems just getting all my media off the Q onto the 3!! it's going to be a long day!

Thanks ,
Gina

Should I include all the cables or just the drive?

I have the same exact problem. I sent the drive back over two weeks ago and have not gotten it back.

What's worse is that I bought another one of the same drives to backup the failing drive to. I backed up the original drive, sent it back and now the new drive is doing the same exact thing- just two weeks later.

Now I have no first drive. No access to my data on the second- brand new drive.

This is months of data and thousands of dollars worth of work for clients that is lost.

2-for-2 on bad drives doesn't really give me confidence in G-Technology or the quality of the drives.

Hi Michael,

Your drive was repaired and shipped out on 7/20, so you should get your drive back soon. When you send in your other drive, mention this thread and put it to my attention in the RMA. We'll do our best to get your drive repaired and back to you. Please let me know if you have any questions.

I too have numerous G-Raid drives that have failed. Nine out of ten times, it turns out that if I change the power supply, the drive would work normally. Now I own fourteen G-Raid drives and only five functioning power supplies.

I wonder if this is a common problem, since so many of my power supplies have failed?

Hi Srdja,

I'm sorry to hear you are having so many power supply problems. Are all the failed supplies the same make and model? Have you contacted tech support to exchange your bad power supplies? If not, send me an email at ggilbert@fabrik.com so we can get your bad power supplies swapped out. Let me know if you have any questions.

Wow. I've been having the same problem with a gdrive Q. I'm running Macbook PRO, 2.93ghz, os10.5.8.
It started a few weeks ago with the 'device removal' error then wouldn't show up at all after i restarted. ran disk warrior, etc and nothing helped. I thought it may be the power supply after reading multiple threads and received a new one through tech support and that's not helping. The drive's fan comes on but i don't hear proper spinning. anh help please? can i bring it in personall to tech support? I'm in the los angeles area. Do i lose the data? this is the only copy of our footage!!

Please help. I really held out a lot of hope for the Graid drives but this drive has cost me a fortune in down time! and perhaps a lost client.

Tracy

Re: G Drive Q not mounting

Like other posters in this thread,

I have had a second G-Drive Q 1TB which refuses to mount after my MB-Pro crashed whilst using Photoshop CS3.

Thankfully I had been able to burn the files I was working on and send them to repro.

However this is the second oldest of my 4, 1TB drives to fail
the 1st after about 2 years, this one 18 months so I hold out little hope for my other two.
I also have a G-Drive mini 200GB who's fire wire 800 port won't work.

I started using G-Drive after I noted that both my La Cie rugged! hard drives had seals on them which said warranty void if broken, were broken. after light usage being carried round in my camera bag.

HOWEVER THESE DRIVES WORK PERFECTLY AND I HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH THEM OR MY 400GB BIG DISK ,WHICH IS OVER 6YEARS OLD!

Just thought you should to know.

I will be sending my drive to G-Tech. to hopefully rescue my files.

But I should'nt be in this situation in the first place.

Re: G Drive Q not mounting
by Ellen Libby on Nov 11, 2009 at 2:43:35 am

I found this thread and just wanted to let you all know that I have spent over 5 hours researching this failed mounting problem. It appears to be a problem no matter what the external drives are being used (Western Digital, LaCie, Iomega, G-Tech..ect). The common complaints are:

Drive worked fine and one day it no longer works.
- most have no signs of the external drive existing at all
- some see it in disk utility

Many had a single faulty dismount when problem started.
Many had problems after OSX upgrade.
Many have tried PRAM reset.
Many have tried power swap or power down and restart.

NO ONE HAS HAD ANY RESOLUTION.

Mac "Genius" techs say it is a hardware failure (meaning the external drive) but many have been able to mount onto other Mac computers. Mac "Genius" claims now that it is a logic board problem...which costs $320 flat fee and 6-9 business days.

GAH!
