G-Drive Q constant whining noise - minijet like noise
by Mirko Cetkovic on Apr 23, 2009 at 6:38:13 pm

I just connected my new g-drive Q 1TB to iMac via FW 800 and I was shocked with the noise. It sounds like mini jet all the time. Constant whining sound. It also has noticeable amount of vibration as well. If I apply slight pressure on the top of the unit near the front end; whining sound almost vanishes. As soon as pressure is released whining is back. When unit goes to sleep mode there is loud clank sound.
I wonder if this is normal ? I bought g-drive Q because of silence (noise level). I have bought it in NYC, USA carried it all over the globe to Serbia to find out that I got the loudest external drive in my collection :(
Can you please advise me what to do now ? Authorized reseller in Belgrade Serbia didn't manage to provide me price list so I have reasonable doubt that they will be able to provide me any help with this issue at all.
Serial number of my unit is W604020382, bought in Apple Store 5th Ave, NYC on April 18th.

thanks in advance,

it seems that problem is definitely in drive sase. I have loosen all the screws except the one with warranty label and high pitch noise is almost gone. Also when peace of paper is inserted between case lid and front panel (meshed panel with white led) high pitch vibration is largely reduced. Everything points in some mechanical friction between the metal caused by HDD vibrations.
The question is:
a) is HDD faulty and produces too much vibrations
b) is case bad lemon and have some mechanical imperfections which cause metal friction which results in high pitched noise

Anyway I have been contacted with g-tech support and we are looking the best option for servicing the drive.

I will keep this post updated.

regards

Mirko
