Hello Michael,

How are you connecting the drive to your computer? Are you using Firefire or USB ?

A single USB port can only supply 500mA of power max. That is why some external drives ship with a Y shaped USB cable so that it can be connected to two USB port allowing 1 amp of power to be drawn via the two USB ports.

That being said, on a small handful of units this cable also is not enough. This may be the case with your drive.

There are two solutions for this, the first is to purchase and external power adapter.

Second, use a FireWire cable if your computer has a port that can provide bus power. The use of a Firewire cable will be able to draw more power and transfer data at a faster rate the USB.

Please note: external bus cards such as an express 34 card will not do because they are unable to provide power over the bus.

Also, if you have a computer that supports a FireWire connection it has to be greater then a four pin port on Sony computers this is know as an iLink connection.

The Firewire 400 (6 pin) or 800 (9 pin) also know as 1394a and 1394b are able to provide power over the cable.

Dear Support Team,

i also have the same problem. From the first time on, that i tried to establish a conection via the FW-800 interface with my Macbook Pro 17", it worked without any success. I discovered that the device is not mounted, neither in The Finder, nor in the Disk Utility or System Profiler. The System Profiler only shows none specific information. In addition i found out that the USB interface works fine on my Macbook Pro. After exchanging the drive yesterday in the Apple Store, the same problem happens to the new drive again.

Regards

André
